Samantha featured in the Times and Transcript:
http://timestranscript.canadaeast.com/news/article/1145259
The name Samantha Robichaud is a familiar moniker in our little part of the country and the Winter Olympics marked one of many opportunities that we had better get used to: sharing her extraordinary talent with the rest of the world.
From the time of her 1997 debut recording "Hitting The Notes," Robichaud has dazzled audiences throughout Canada and the United States. And as a part of the Mosaïq Concert Series, Robichaud will be performing on the Bell Aliant Music Stage in front of Moncton City Hall on Main Street tomorrow. The show starts at noon.
Robichaud admits that having the opportunity to be a part of such a monumental event such as the Olympic opening ceremonies was indeed something to be savoured.
"It was such a fantastic experience and just an incredible opportunity that I was given. Getting to work with such talented people on such a large scale production was a huge honour for me," she says.
Although some may tend to think of the fiddle as a musical instrument of limited appeal, Robichaud says that she has noticed a big difference in the way people's perception has changed for the better in recent times. Being involved in the Olympics didn't hurt her cause either, of course.
"I think having fiddlers involved in the opening ceremonies gave a chance to the genre to be exposed in a whole new light. Many times in the past had I mentioned that I played the fiddle, it would be an uphill battle explaining that it is an instrument that truly has a lot to offer.
"These days though, the genre is on the rise, people are more readily accepting of it and often cite the Olympics as the turning point' of their perception."
Robichaud's most recent studio effort, Collected, was released in 2009 and has seen her support the record in many places all over the world.
Last fall, Robichaud had the opportunity to perform at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco alongside fellow Maritimer Natalie McMaster as well as luminaries such as Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle and Elvis Costello.
"Playing that festival felt to me like having the chance to be a part of history," she recalls. "It was just a huge honour to be in the presence of some of these people."
Robichaud has logged many miles performing throughout the United States and has always found it interesting how warmly fiddling is received there.
"It's really amazing, the response I get from U.S. audiences," she notes.
Asked why she feels Americans are so supportive of the genre, she believes it has a lot to do with the fact that the fiddle hasn't quite permeated the U.S. population as a whole just yet.
"I've received warm responses from places that you would perhaps least expect it, like in California," she says before continuing.
"Here in Atlantic Canada, I think we take the fiddle and fiddling for granted because we are constantly exposed to it. We're surrounded by it, it seems.
"But in the States, Americans have latched onto it as something that is new and different. It is more of a unique thing to audiences there."
Robichaud is on home turf tomorrow. Be sure to catch her performance in downtown Moncton when she'll be accompanied by multi-instrumentalist Chris Colepaugh.

Many Thanks!!!
I want to thank each and every one of you for voting for me for the East Coast Music Awards Fans Choice Award for 2010. Winning this award was a wonderful experience for me and it would have never have happened without your support.
This past month has been a time in my music career that I will always remember with winning an ECMA, to be featured on the Opening Ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics and having A Song for Daniel up for Instrumental song in the International Songwriting competition as well up for ISC Peoples' Voice Award.
A Song for Daniel is a very special song for me for two reasons. It was written and recorded for the amazing CD This is my America which was produced by Douglas Hutton and is in memory of Daniel Pearl who was an American Journalist whose life was taken much too early. His memory lives on when all of us play music to break down barriers and bring people of all cultures closer together.
If you care to vote for the Peoples Voice Award please click on this link:

SAMANTHA ROBICHAUD - Collected
Own label SR070509
13 tracks, 41 minutes
She certainly is! With or without the album-cover's glamorous red look, Sam Robichaud has to be one of New Brunswick's hottest properties and is widely recognized as a top Canadian fiddler. And that's saying something: the competition is fierce in the Maritimes and beyond, but this recording shows a mature and perfectly poised musician who deserves elbow-room with the best of them. Collected is not a collection of previous material - it's all new, and friskier than a moose on molasses. Starting with her own darkly dramatic tune Desired over a folk-rock arrangement, Sam sweeps into a showpiece version of The Musical Priest before relaxing with a set of old-timey jigs and reels in contra band style. The charming waltz Cassie's Lament is another Robichaud original, as are about half the tunes here.
The melting pot of Atlantic Canada provides a rich palette for a fiddler to work with. Ladies of the Storm owes a lot to Scottish fiddle tunes, while Crossing the Province brings in the characteristic accordion and percussion of French Canadian traditions. Oliver's Set combines two brilliantly distinctive compositions by Ontario fiddler and prolific composer Oliver Schroer who sadly died in 2008. On the only song here, a French nonsense ballad, Samantha reminds us that she can sing too, and makes the most of another opportunity to mix fiddle with accordion and percussion. T-Bone's Jig is a new composition straight from the heart of the tradition, this time more Irish than Scottish in ancestry.
The final third of Collected changes horses in quick succession. A Song for Daniel is a gorgeous air on fiddle and fretless bass, but don't try to waltz to this one. Mobility Set is modern North American fiddling pure and simple, somewhere between Celtic and Country, great fun. The showmanship continues on an old French Canadian medley, adding the final secret ingredient - a jaw harp! You'd expect something special to finish, and that's exactly what Sam provides: Tugboat, an old swing tune with trad jazz drums and newgrass dobro behind the wailing fiddle of this prodigious young lady. www.samantharobichaud.ca is the place for more info on Collected and other albums, music definitely not to be missed.

Hi there!
Welcome to my new website! I am very excited to have a place to blog and tell stories of what's new and going on.
This past month has been a thrill, just received the final product of my sixth CD Collected. It turned out better than I could have imagined, from sound to graphics! It has a compilation of my own original tunes along with some great traditional ones. Please check it out!
Last weekend Chris Colepaugh and I did a show at the Dragon Fly Cafe, in Antigonish N.S. and dedicated it to Daniel Pearl for Harmony for Humanity. It was such a great atmosphere. They have artist come in and perform while the audience gets to enjoy incredible food. Kind of like a dinner theatre. I really suggest everyone should go at least once....! I can't wait to go back.
Well that's all for now,...thanks for checking out the new site!
